Several months ago, SOE introduced Krono to its Everquest worlds. Krono is a trade-able item that can be redeemed for 30 days of playtime. At first I thought it was a great move to combat plat selling and keep the money going SOE’s way. On further inspection, it’s actually made it possible to play the game without putting any money into it at all. If you have the time and the inclination, you can make enough on either game to keep buying Krono. With my recent return to the land of EQ1, I thought of the potential in playing EQ2 to help fund EQ1, essentially working a virtual job to support my virtual crack habit. It’s something of a dream come true, as I remember thinking about this back in the early days of gold selling and getting paid for my time playing.
Thinking about it even more, I thought this could be a good way to teach kids the value of money and work. Give them a free account or maybe set them up with a few months of gold level playtime. Seeing the difference between the two account levels would encourage them to work towards having the nicer gear and such. It will even prepare them for life as a corporate drone. 😀
(Yes, I’m kidding about putting kids to work in EQ. They should be outside playing, not sitting around staring at screens everywhere they go.)
